Congratulations to our fifth and sixth classes who won the final of the Concern Regional Debate Final. Táimid íontach bródúil astu.
The motion was
“In ten years’ time, no country should be using fossil fuels.”
Deravoy was opposing the motion.
It was a tough and challenging motion. But it was our fifth debate of the academic year and the experience of researching, preparing speeches and winning all four debates against different schools leading up to the final helped enormously.
We were proud of our pupils and their commitment in each of the debates and how they worked cooperatively and supportively to achieve this success. We hope that their experience will stand to them in the years to come as it helped develop their critical thinking skills, their ability in public speaking and their collaborative skills.
The debate final was held in Monaghan Education Support Centre. There was great excitement as we travelled to the Education Centre but there was also a degree of trepidation also as we were going to meet our opponents, Bunscoil Lughaidh Carrickmacross.
All the speakers from both teams presented really strong arguments and refutes for and against the motion. The three Concern adjudicators adjourned for some time to consider the arguments from both teams.
Eventually the result was announced. The motion was defeated. Deravoy N.S. had won the final. There was a rapturous appplause when the team realised that after all the exceptionally hard work all year, they had won the final.
There were lots of photos taken and the celebrations began!
We appreciated the staff of Monaghan Education Centre for coordinating the Concern Debate Programme. We were grateful for the warm welcome and the tasty treats for children and staff.
Thanks also to Concern worldwide for challenging us with the debates and making us aware of the global problems, from the implications of climate change to food security and poverty.
We arrivived back to Carrickroe and enjoyed some lovely treats at The Village Brew. Comhghairdeachas do na páistí uilig i ranganna cúig agus a sé.
